Hag-seed by Margaret Atwood
'Hag-seed' is an appropriation of Shakespeare’s 'The Tempest' and would be well worth reading by senior students who are studying the play. It transports the story to modern day Canada, where an ambitious theatre director is fired in the middle of preparing his production of 'The Tempest' for performance, betrayed by an assistant who callously usurps his role. Later, an opportunity presents itself to direct the play as part of a literacy program being taught in a medium-security prison and our protagonist is able to plot his revenge.
Atwood cleverly transports the story to this setting with her trademark brilliance and is able to capture the same themes and concerns in a modern and relatable way. I strongly recommend this book and feel confident that it will be an enjoyable and challenging read.
