About

Green screen

These days, very little comes out of Hollywood without special effects added in post-production. Our favourite superhero movies, science fiction thrillers and fast-paced action movies just wouldn't be the same without them. However, these video effects are no longer the preserve of video professionals. Technology has advanced quickly, and you can now use green screen effects on your iPad. Here's how.

(PLEASE NOTE: The majority of the content for this workshop has been taken from Jonathan Wylie's blog page "How to use Green Screen Effects using an iPad" )

BEFORE YOU START:

There are a number of things you need in order to use green screen effects on iPads. Some are optional, but the essentials are:

Additional items you might want to consider could include a sturdy tripod and an iPad frame like the Padcaster or Makayama Movie Mount to secure the iPad while shooting your video. You might also consider some studio lighting to light your background, or an external microphone to improve your audio. However, these are optional items and may not be possible given your budget, space or time requirements.

GREEN SCREEN SHOOTING TIPS

In order for your green screen movie to look as good as it should, there are a few things you should endeavor to do when filming your footage. These are important things to think about because they could be the difference between a natural looking green screen effect and a fuzzy halo around your subjects. So, consider the following:

  1. Use a good quality green screen that has a consistent color. Technically it doesn't have to be green, it could be blue or even red, but green works well with most software.

  2. Make sure your background is well lit. Earlier I suggested some studio lighting to help with this, but any light source would work as long as the green screen is evenly lit without too much variation in light or shadow.

  3. Speaking of shadows, try to ensure that your subject does not cast shadows on your backdrop. Try changing your lighting or moving the subject further away from the green screen to see if that helps.

  4. Clothing choices are important. If your subject wears the same color of clothing as your backdrop they will appear eerily transparent! See the video below for an example of what I mean.

  5. Lastly, do a test shoot to check your lighting and subject will are well placed and look good when viewed in your green screen editing app. There is nothing worse than having to re-shoot your entire video because you missed something in your initial setup.
