Mary MacKillop is Australia’s first saint. She was born in the 1800s and devoted her life to teaching children. Mary believed everyone should have the chance to learn, no matter how rich or poor they are. In 1866 she set up her first school and founded an order of nuns called the Sisters of St Joseph of the Sacred Heart. The Sisters continue to do the good work Mary started. In this collection of interviews, Anne Henderson reveals the inner lives of the sisters of St. Joseph. Through their own words, the sisters reflect on their work, their vows of poverty, chastity and obedience, and what these mean in the modern world.
MacKillop House is named after Saint Mary of the Cross MacKillop (1842-1909), who was the co-founder of the Sisters of Saint Joseph of the Sacred Heart. She is the first Australian to be canonised and is well-known for her charity works throughout Australia. She founded schools for the poor and cared for anyone in need: orphans, elderly and friendless of all ages. Throughout life she faced many adversities but always exhibited determination, compassion, honesty, humility and courage. She strived to 'never see a need without doing something about it!'
